Voluma

A Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Stanford University with over 30 years of experience offers Juvéderm Voluma at our Los Gatos practice.

If your face has started to look older than you feel, you’re not alone. The gradual flattening of the cheeks and loss of definition in the midface are among the most common changes people notice with age, and for many, those changes affect how confident they feel in their own skin. That’s a completely understandable response to something that happens to all of us. What matters is that you have options, and restoring a more natural, rested appearance doesn’t have to mean surgery or a dramatic transformation.

Our founding surgeon Dr. Kirk A. Churukian, M.D. is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has more than 30 years in facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. We offer Voluma in Los Gatos and throughout the greater San Jose area. Juvéderm Voluma XC restores that lost midface volume without surgery. We offer complimentary consultations.

Voluma Treatment at Dr. Kirk A. Churukian

Age-related volume loss in the midface often produces changes that look like drooping or heaviness when the real issue is structural. The fat pads beneath the cheeks thin and descend with age, pulling the face downward. Voluma works at the deeper tissue level to restore that lost foundation, creating a subtle lift that brings the midface back into balance.

We offer Voluma as part of a broader menu of injectables and fillers at our Los Gatos practice, serving patients from San Jose and throughout the Bay Area. A complimentary consultation will help determine whether Voluma is the right fit for your specific facial structure and goals.

Full Menu of Injectable and Facial Services We Offer

Juvéderm Voluma XC is one of several injectable and facial rejuvenation options we offer at Dr. Kirk A. Churukian’s practice. Depending on your goals and the degree of change you’re looking for, different treatments or combinations may serve you better than Voluma alone.

  • Juvéderm Voluma XC. Juvéderm Voluma XC restores volume in the cheeks and midface using a thick hyaluronic acid formula designed for deeper injection. It creates lift and definition in areas where age-related volume loss has flattened or softened facial contours, and results typically hold for up to two years.
  • Juvéderm. Standard Juvéderm formulas address volume loss and deeper lines in the lips, nasolabial folds, and other facial areas. Patients often combine them with Voluma to manage both midface volume and perioral lines in a single session.
  • Skinvive. Unlike Voluma, Skinvive improves skin quality, specifically hydration, smoothness, and texture, rather than restoring structural volume. Many patients use both treatments together to address different aspects of facial aging at the same time.
  • Botox. Botox addresses dynamic wrinkles in the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes that Voluma does not target. Combining both in one appointment is common and efficient for patients managing multiple signs of facial aging.
  • Fat grafting. For patients who want a longer-lasting alternative to injectable volume restoration, fat grafting transfers the patient’s own fat to areas of the face that have lost fullness. Dr. Churukian performs fat grafting as a complement to or substitute for hyaluronic acid fillers, depending on each patient’s goals and anatomy.
  • Eyelid surgery. Volume loss in the midface often draws attention to changes around the eyes as well. Dr. Churukian’s eyelid lift addresses the hooding and puffiness that Voluma cannot correct, and the two treatments work well together in a coordinated facial plan.
  • Laser skin resurfacing. After restoring volume, some patients want to address skin tone and surface quality as well. Our CO2 laser resurfacing treats sun damage, surface irregularities, and overall skin quality concerns that fillers do not reach.
  • In-office facelift. Patients with more significant facial aging sometimes find that injectables don’t fully address what they’re seeing. Dr. Churukian’s in-office facelift technique delivers meaningful results with a lighter anesthesia protocol and considerably less recovery than traditional surgery.

Why Choose Dr. Kirk A. Churukian for Voluma?

An Artistic Approach to Natural Results

Dr. Churukian built his reputation on producing results that look like the patient, only refreshed. That philosophy drives how he approaches every volume restoration treatment.

He grew up the eldest son of Armenian parents in Southern California and went on to complete one of the most rigorous plastic surgery training paths in the country, earning his medical degree at USC and finishing his plastic surgery residency at the University of Louisville. His memberships in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reflect a sustained commitment to both reconstructive and cosmetic practice that has now spanned more than three decades.

A Practice That Puts People First

Dr. Churukian has been serving patients in the Los Gatos and San Jose area for more than 30 years. In that time, he has also served as Medical Director of VIP Surgicare Ambulatory Surgical Center since 2005, giving patients access to a dedicated clinical setting for both surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Our practice is dedicated to personalized treatment programs and transparent service because we’re passionate about helping people achieve their aesthetic goals in the best way possible. We also offer monthly specials on injectable treatments throughout the year, which can make Voluma and related treatments more accessible for patients exploring their options.

Understanding Voluma Treatment

Conditions We Address and How Voluma Helps

Juvéderm Voluma XC works best for patients experiencing structural changes in the midface, specifically the kind that happen gradually as facial fat redistributes and diminishes with age. Common presentations that bring patients in for a Voluma consultation include:

  • Cheeks that look flat or sunken compared to how they appeared ten years ago
  • Loss of definition along the cheekbone, making the face appear less structured
  • A tired or drawn appearance that persists regardless of rest or skincare
  • Early descent of the midface that creates the appearance of heaviness in the lower face
  • Cheeks that look thin from weight loss or have always lacked volume genetically

Voluma addresses these concerns by placing a thick, durable hyaluronic acid formula in the deep tissue of the cheek area, restoring the structural foundation that supports the overlying skin. It does not smooth fine lines or improve skin texture directly; those concerns respond better to different treatments.

Patients who experience more advanced facial aging alongside significant skin laxity sometimes find that a combination approach serves them better than Voluma alone. We may explore simpler facelift approaches for patients in that camp as well, which can produce more significant change than injectables when the degree of aging warrants it.

What Should You Expect from Voluma?

We perform Voluma treatment in the office, and most appointments run between 30 and 45 minutes. The Voluma formula contains lidocaine to help manage discomfort during injection, and we apply a topical numbing agent beforehand as well.

  • Most patients experience some swelling, tenderness, or bruising in the treated area that resolves within one to two weeks
  • Results appear relatively quickly but continue to settle and look more natural over the first two to four weeks as swelling clears and the product integrates
  • Voluma produces structural lift and definition rather than surface-level changes, so improvement develops gradually rather than appearing all at once
  • Most patients return to their normal routine the following day
  • We recommend avoiding vigorous exercise, excessive sun exposure, and alcohol for the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment

What Is the Typical Treatment Timeline?

Timelines vary depending on how much volume needs restoring and whether we’re combining Voluma with other treatments. A general framework:

  • Consultation. Dr. Churukian evaluates your facial structure, discusses your goals, and builds a treatment plan. Patients who want to combine Voluma with other injectables plan that here.
  • First session. Treatment typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. Dr. Churukian recommends the number of syringes based on the degree of volume loss and your structural goals.
  • Results phase, weeks one through four. Initial volume and lift appear quickly, then settle gradually as swelling resolves and the product integrates into the tissue.
  • Follow-up. We evaluate your results together and determine whether a touch-up or additional syringe makes sense.
  • Maintenance. Clinical data supports up to two years of results with optimal treatment. Many patients return annually for a smaller maintenance session to sustain the effect.

What Should You Bring to Your First Visit?

  • Your insurance card. Juvéderm Voluma XC is a cosmetic procedure and typically falls outside of insurance coverage, but we keep your information on file and can walk through payment options and any current specials at your appointment.
  • A complete list of current medications, supplements, or blood thinners, since some of these increase bruising risk at the injection site.
  • Photos that illustrate the change you’re hoping to achieve; before-and-after references give Dr. Churukian useful context during the evaluation.
  • A clear description of the facial concerns you want to address and the degree of change you’re looking for.

At your first appointment, Dr. Churukian will evaluate your facial structure, walk through realistic expectations with you, and answer your questions before recommending any treatment. There is no obligation to move forward on the day.

What Are Some Important California Voluma Resources?

Patients researching Juvéderm Voluma in California may find the following resources useful for background information and provider verification before scheduling:

  • The Food and Drug Administration regulates injectable treatments including Juvéderm Voluma XC and maintains public records on approved medical devices. Patients can search the FDA database to confirm a product’s approval status before scheduling treatment.
  • The Medical Board of California allows patients to verify that a physician holds a current, unrestricted California medical license. We encourage patients to use this tool before scheduling any cosmetic procedure.
  • The American Society of Plastic Surgeons offers educational resources on injectables and provides guidance on finding a qualified, board-certified provider for any cosmetic treatment.

These resources serve as useful starting points for independent research and do not substitute for a consultation with a licensed physician. A direct evaluation is the appropriate way to determine whether Voluma is right for your specific facial structure and goals.
