Juvederm

Juvederm

Volume loss in the cheeks, deep folds around the mouth, and thin or uneven lips are some of the most common concerns patients raise in our office. Juvederm is a family of FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers formulated to address each of those areas with a different product tailored to the specific concern.

Our Juvederm treatments are performed by Dr. Kirk A. Churukian personally, using the product in the Juvederm line that best matches the area being treated and the patient’s goals. Dr. Churukian has more than thirty years of plastic surgery practice behind him, and injectable work is a natural extension of the facial procedures offered at our office. Treatments take place in-office, require no downtime in most cases, and produce visible results the same day. Hyaluronic acid is a substance the body produces naturally, which makes it among the more predictable options for face filler.

Why Choose Dr. Kirk A. Churukian for Cosmetic Procedures in California?

Filler results come down to product selection, dosing precision, and the hand doing the injecting. Our plastic surgery practice is structured around all three.

Physician-Administered Injections

Every Juvederm treatment in our office is performed personally by Dr. Churukian. Patients work with the same physician through consultation, injection, and follow-up, which keeps treatment planning consistent from visit to visit. Injectable work sits on top of complex facial anatomy, and physician-level training becomes especially relevant when rare complications like vascular compromise need to be recognized and treated quickly.

Surgical Training That Informs Each Injection

Dr. Churukian holds board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery and Fellow status with the American College of Surgeons. His surgical training at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and later at the University of Louisville covered reconstructive facial work, which gives him a detailed working knowledge of the anatomy beneath each injection site. He also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Stanford University, where he teaches plastic surgery residents.

Conservative, Natural Results

Our office favors measured, natural-looking outcomes over dramatic change. Filler dosing is calibrated to the patient’s existing facial structure rather than applied against a generic template. Before and after documentation across our patient gallery shows that philosophy in real cases, where the improvement is noticeable but the patient still looks like themselves.

Types of Juvederm Treatments We Offer

The Juvederm line includes several products, each engineered for a specific area and concern. Treatment planning starts by identifying what the patient actually wants to change, then selecting the right product for that goal.

  • Juvederm Voluma XC (cheek and chin augmentation). Voluma is formulated for deeper placement and adding lift in the mid-face. It restores cheek contour lost to aging and can reshape a recessed or weak chin without surgery.
  • Juvederm Vollure XC (nasolabial folds). Vollure smooths moderate to severe folds that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Results typically last up to eighteen months in most patients.
  • Juvederm Volbella XC (lips and perioral lines). Volbella adds subtle volume to the lips and softens the fine vertical lines that develop around the mouth over time. It is a common choice for patients who want definition without an obvious filled look.
  • Juvederm Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC (lips and deeper folds). The Ultra products handle fuller lip augmentation and smoothing of deeper facial folds. Ultra Plus is reserved for more pronounced volume correction in the lower face.
  • Juvederm Volux XC (jawline definition). Volux sculpts and defines the jawline for patients who want a sharper lower-face profile. The product is denser than the others in the line and is placed along the mandibular border.
  • Juvederm Skinvive (skin smoothness and hydration). Skinvive is a microdroplet hyaluronic acid treatment that improves overall skin texture and hydration rather than adding structural volume. It works well as a maintenance treatment between other procedures.
  • Combined treatment planning. Many patients benefit from two or three Juvederm products working together, sometimes paired with Botox treatments to address both static lines and dynamic expression wrinkles at the same visit.

Important Aspects of Juvederm

Injectable fillers look simple from the outside. The needle goes in, the product settles, the patient leaves. The reality is more nuanced, and patients who understand what happens before, during, and after treatment tend to get better outcomes from the process.

Hyaluronic acid is the active ingredient across the entire Juvederm line. It is a substance the body produces naturally, which is why allergic reactions are rare and the material breaks down predictably over time. The FDA has approved these dermal fillers for specific uses, and each Juvederm product went through its own clinical trial data before approval for its indicated area.

Results are visible immediately, though full settling takes one to two weeks as initial swelling resolves. Longevity varies by product and treatment area. Voluma can last up to two years in the cheeks. Volbella in the lips typically lasts around twelve months. Vollure in the folds holds for roughly eighteen months. Metabolism, activity level, and injection depth all affect how long a given result lasts from patient to patient.

Bruising and swelling are the most common side effects and usually resolve within a few days. Patients planning a major event should schedule treatment at least two weeks beforehand. Blood-thinning medications, fish oil, and alcohol can increase bruising, so we review any supplements and medications during consultation.

Serious complications are rare but real. Vascular occlusion, where filler inadvertently enters or compresses a blood vessel, can cause skin necrosis or visual changes if not recognized and treated immediately. This is one of the main reasons physician administration matters in our office. Hyaluronidase, the enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid fillers, should be on hand during any treatment, and we keep it readily available at all times.

Juvederm is reversible, which sets it apart from some other filler categories. FDA guidance on facial fillers notes that hyaluronic acid products can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if a patient is unhappy with the result or if a complication develops. That reversibility is one reason Juvederm remains among the most widely used options in cosmetic and plastic surgery.

Consultations in our office examine facial anatomy both at rest and in animation. Some lines show up only during expression and respond better to a neuromodulator than to filler. Others are structural and call for volume replacement. That distinction drives which Juvederm product makes sense in which area.

How Can Juvederm Help Me?

Patients come in for Juvederm with different priorities, and the product line delivers across several distinct goals. These are the most common reasons our California patients pursue filler treatment.

  1. It restores volume lost to aging. The mid-face loses fat pad volume and bone density over time, which creates hollowing in the cheeks and a tired appearance. Voluma rebuilds that contour without any surgical intervention.
  1. It smooths deep folds without a facelift. Patients who are not ready for surgery can see meaningful improvement in nasolabial folds and marionette lines through Vollure or Ultra Plus. The correction lasts over a year and costs a fraction of what surgery would run.
  1. It enhances the lips naturally. Volbella and Ultra target different lip goals, from subtle definition to fuller augmentation. Dosing stays conservative in our practice so lips look proportional to the rest of the face rather than dominating it.
  1. It defines the jawline. Volux reshapes the lower face for patients who want a sharper jawline angle. The effect is particularly noticeable in patients whose jawline has softened with age or weight changes.
  1. It improves skin quality. Skinvive treats texture and hydration rather than volume, which addresses a concern that sits between traditional skin services and structural injectables and fillers. Patients notice a glow within two weeks of treatment.
  1. It complements other treatments. Juvederm works alongside other facial procedures and laser work to address multiple signs of aging under one treatment plan rather than a piecemeal approach.
  1. It delivers results with minimal downtime. Most patients return to work the same day or the day after their appointment. That makes filler treatment compatible with busy schedules in a way surgical procedures generally are not.

Choosing the right Juvederm product and the right dose requires a real consultation rather than a price list. We start by listening to what you want to change about your face, then examine the underlying anatomy to determine which products would work and in what quantity. Some patients need a single syringe for a focused concern. Others benefit from a combined plan across two or three products over multiple visits. The consultation covers product options, realistic outcomes, cost, and the timeline for visible results.
