Skinvive

Skinvive

Board-certified plastic surgeon with more than 30 years of clinical experience, serving patients in Los Gatos, San Jose, and throughout the Bay Area.

If your skin feels rough, looks dull, or has lost the softness it once had, and your current skincare routine is no longer producing results, Skinvive may be worth a conversation. It’s an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid injectable that improves skin quality from within, rather than adding volume or altering facial structure.

Our lead practitioner, Dr. Kirk A. Churukian, M.D., board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery with more than 30 years in plastic and cosmetic surgery, offers Skinvive in Los Gatos and throughout the greater San Jose area. Complimentary consultations are available.

Skinvive Treatment at Dr. Kirk A. Churukian

Traditional fillers restore volume beneath the skin. Skinvive works differently. Injected in small microdroplets just beneath the skin’s surface, it targets the skin tissue itself rather than the deeper structural layers beneath it. The result is improved hydration, smoother texture, and a more refreshed overall appearance that develops gradually over the first few weeks following treatment.

We serve patients in Los Gatos, San Jose, and throughout the Bay Area who are exploring non-surgical approaches to skin improvement. Skinvive works well alongside the other injectables and fillers we offer and fits naturally within a broader facial rejuvenation plan. A complimentary consultation is the best first step.

Full Menu of Injectable and Skin Services We Offer

Skinvive is one treatment within a broader range of injectable and skin rejuvenation services we offer at Dr. Kirk A. Churukian’s practice. From FDA-approved skin boosters to advanced laser procedures, our services address a variety of aesthetic goals and timelines.

  • Skinvive by Juvéderm. Skinvive holds the distinction of being the only FDA-approved injectable designed specifically to improve cheek skin smoothness. It delivers hyaluronic acid in microdroplet form into the skin’s middle layer, improving how skin feels and looks at the tissue level rather than adding structural volume beneath it.
  • Botox. Botox targets dynamic wrinkles that form from repetitive facial movement, most commonly in the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes. Many patients combine it with Skinvive because the two treatments work on different concerns and complement each other well.
  • Juvéderm. Juvéderm fillers use hyaluronic acid to restore volume and smooth deeper lines in the lips, nasolabial folds, and cheeks. Patients managing multiple facial concerns often pair them with Skinvive, since each treatment works through a different mechanism.
  • Voluma. Voluma lifts and restores volume in the midface, and results can hold for up to two years. Patients who want longer-term structural improvement rather than surface-level hydration tend to find it a practical fit.
  • Laser skin resurfacing. Our CO2 laser treatments improve skin tone, reduce sun damage, and address surface texture concerns more intensively than Skinvive does. Patients with more pronounced skin quality issues who can accommodate a recovery period are typically the best candidates.
  • Laser Skin Renewal. Beyond CO2 resurfacing, we offer laser-based options that target pigmentation, mild skin laxity, and other visible signs of aging with clinical precision.
  • In-office facelift. Dr. Churukian’s in-office facelift technique uses a lighter anesthesia protocol and delivers meaningful cosmetic results with less recovery than a traditional surgical facelift. Patients whose goals go beyond what injectables can address often find it the right next step.
  • Non-surgical skin rejuvenation. Our skin services menu gives patients who want to maintain and improve their skin health a range of non-surgical options that don’t require surgery or significant downtime.

Why Choose Dr. Kirk A. Churukian for Skinvive?

Surgical Foundation, Applied to Injectable Treatments

Dr. Churukian trained at several of the country’s most respected surgical programs. He earned his medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California and completed his plastic surgery training at the University of Louisville, which included the Kutz and Kleinert Hand Surgery Program. General surgery residency was completed at UCSF. He has been board-certified in plastic surgery since 1999. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and holds an academic appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Stanford University, where he continues mentoring plastic surgery trainees.

That depth of training shapes how he approaches every procedure, including non-surgical ones. Placing any injectable with accuracy requires a thorough understanding of facial anatomy. The difference between a good result and a great one comes down to where the product is placed, how it integrates into surrounding tissue, and how it interacts with nearby structures.

A Practice Grounded in This Community

Our office has been serving patients in the Los Gatos and San Jose area for more than 30 years. In addition to his cosmetic practice, Dr. Churukian serves as a trauma specialist at local hospitals, treating facial and complex reconstructive injuries. That combination of cosmetic and reconstructive experience informs how he evaluates every patient, regardless of whether the procedure is surgical or injectable.

We also offer monthly specials on injectable treatments throughout the year, which can make Skinvive and related treatments more accessible for patients who are exploring their options.

Understanding Skinvive Treatment

Conditions We Address and How Skinvive Helps

Skinvive is appropriate for patients experiencing changes in skin quality. Not significant volume loss or structural aging, but surface-level changes that make skin feel less resilient and look less vibrant. Common concerns that bring patients in for a hyaluronic acid skin booster consultation include:

  • Dry or dehydrated skin that topical products have not resolved
  • Rough or uneven texture across the cheeks
  • Fine surface lines that become more visible when skin lacks hydration
  • Dull or flat skin tone despite a consistent skincare routine
  • Early signs of skin aging that do not yet indicate a need for surgery

Skinvive addresses these concerns by introducing hyaluronic acid into the intradermal layer of the skin, where it attracts and retains moisture within the tissue itself. This is distinct from how traditional fillers function. Skinvive does not add structural support, lift, or fill. It hydrates and smooths at the surface level. The FDA approved Juvéderm Skinvive IDC in 2023 as the first injectable of its kind cleared specifically to improve cheek skin smoothness. That is a clinically meaningful distinction in the injectable market, and it reflects a growing area of focus in non-surgical skin care.

What Should You Expect from Skinvive?

Treatment takes place in the office and typically runs between 20 and 30 minutes. We apply a topical numbing cream beforehand, then place the product in a measured grid pattern across the cheeks using a fine needle, targeting the intradermal layer directly.

  • Most patients experience mild swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites, which clears within a few days
  • The hyaluronic acid needs time to integrate, so expect results to develop gradually over two to four weeks rather than immediately
  • The FDA-approved treatment area covers the cheeks; bring your broader facial goals to the consultation and we can plan from there
  • Most patients return to normal daily activity the same day or within 24 hours
  • Protect the treated area from direct sun exposure during the initial recovery period; sun protection matters more than usual in those first few days

What Is the Typical Treatment Timeline?

Individual timelines vary depending on baseline skin condition, age, lifestyle factors, and whether Skinvive is combined with other treatments. Here is a general framework:

  • Consultation. Dr. Churukian reviews your skin concerns, discusses your goals in detail, and builds a treatment plan. If a combination approach makes sense, we address that here.
  • First session. The procedure takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Depending on your baseline skin condition, we may recommend one or two initial sessions.
  • Results phase, weeks two through six. Your skin continues to improve in hydration and smoothness as the hyaluronic acid integrates into the tissue. Most patients see the clearest difference around the four-week mark.
  • Follow-up. We evaluate your results together and decide whether a second session makes sense.
  • Maintenance. Most patients enjoy roughly six months of improvement before scheduling a maintenance session to keep results going.

What Should You Bring to Your First Visit?

  • Your insurance card. Most insurance plans do not cover cosmetic injectables like Skinvive, but keeping your information on file helps us assist you. We can walk through payment options and any current specials at your appointment.
  • A complete list of current medications, supplements, or blood thinners. Some of these increase bruising at the injection site, and we want to know about them ahead of time
  • Records from any previous facial injectable treatments, if applicable.
  • A clear, specific description of your skin concerns and what you’re hoping to achieve.

Your first appointment will include a review of your skin history, an honest conversation about realistic outcomes, and time to ask questions. There is no obligation to move forward on the day of the consultation.

What Are Some Important Skinvive Resources?

Patients researching Skinvive in California may find the following resources useful for background information and provider verification before scheduling:

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates injectable treatments including Skinvive and maintains public information on approved drugs and devices. Patients can search the FDA database to confirm a product’s approval status.
  • The Medical Board of California allows patients to verify that a physician holds a current, unrestricted California medical license. Use the license lookup tool before scheduling any procedure.
  • The American Society of Plastic Surgeons maintains patient-facing educational resources on cosmetic procedures, including non-surgical injectables, and provides guidance on choosing a qualified provider.

These resources are provided for informational purposes only, and do not substitute for a consultation with a licensed physician. A personalized evaluation is the appropriate way to determine whether Skinvive is right for your skin condition and goals.
